I was born and raised in Central Texas and, in fact, am a seventh generation Texan. My family having moved here in 1831. After high school, I attended Baylor University where I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and subsequently attended University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas where I graduated in the top ten of my class.
I was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the Lang Memorial Publishing Award at the time of my graduation. I subsequently did a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Parkland Hospital in Dallas where I served as Chief Resident as well. I have been in private practice in Corpus Christi since 1983. I am a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. I am a member of the Society for Reproductive Medicine and a member of the American Society of Clinical Research Professionals.

Since 2000, my practice was limited to gynecology and gynecological surgery with an emphasis on urogynecology as well as robotic surgery. In addition, I am the owner and medical director of Advanced Research Associates, a site for clinical research, as well as limited basic science research. We have been involved in over 60 clinical trials. I have worked with 40 different major pharmaceutical companies and clinical research organizations.
Over these years, one of the most challenging aspects of my practice has been helping women lead a healthy, fit lifestyle while simultaneously experiencing the effects of childbearing, menopausal changes, and societal influences. All of these changes in women’s care have unfortunately had a negative impact on weight management. Indeed, obesity and its subsequent complications are a leading cause of death in the United States and have a huge economic, medical, and social impact on the health of our country. Texas (South Texas in particular) is leading the country in morbid obesity. Unfortunately, despite the incredible toll that obesity takes on our society, very little has been done in the medical community or by healthcare providers to provide assistance, counseling, and practical guidelines for our overweight patients. Unfortunately, this has led many patients to seek fads and gimmicks offered on television and the internet to deal with their weight which very often are ineffective and sometimes dangerous.
